How Inlays and Onlays Help Tooth Decay

If you have a dental cavity, it’s important to get it taken care of. Tooth decay can lead to tooth loss and further problems with your oral health. What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are made of either composite resin or dental ceramic. These materials are able to be color-matched to your smile and are designed to mimic the look and feel of your natural teeth.

Onlays are often called partial crowns, as they can be a cheaper option for a full dental crown. They’re used for damage that’s on the cusps of the teeth. Inlays are used for the surface of the teeth. When the tooth decay is severe enough that a filling won’t be able to take care of it, but may not be bad enough to warrant using a dental crown, that’s when an inlay is used.

What Can I Expect From the Inlay and Onlay Process?

Before anything else, one of our dentists will perform a thorough oral examination. They’ll examine the tooth decay and determine if an inlay or onlay can take care of it. If your dentist decides that an inlay or onlay is right for you, they’ll then completely clean the area affected by the tooth decay.

Then, your tooth is scanned with 3D technology. This scan is what’s used to create your inlay or onlay. Using the CEREC technology that’s offered at our office, we can create the restoration in a single visit. Your inlay or onlay can be completed in one day! After the restoration is finished, it will be cemented to your tooth using dental bonding.

Before you leave, we’ll do one final check to ensure that the restoration is secure and that your bite is lining up properly. We will make adjustments if needed. After that, you get to enjoy having the full functionality of your tooth again!

CEREC Dental Technology

The benefits of CEREC technology make getting inlays, onlays, and even dental crowns easier and faster. These restorations are customized and can be made and placed in a single visit to our office. We take a 3D model of the tooth that needs restoration. Then, we send the model to a milling machine that we have in-office, making your inlay or onlay right there.

With this technology, you also don’t have to go through the irritating process of getting molds and impressions done so that your restoration can be shaped. You don’t have to wait weeks for your permanent restoration while you have an ill-fitting temporary or none at all. The materials used are durable, metal-free, and can set you up with a permanent fix to your dental issue.
