Root CanalAn Overview
A root canal may be needed to save a damaged or infected tooth. Tooth extractions are the last line of defense when attempting to treat a damaged tooth. To avoid a tooth extraction, your dentist may suggest a root canal. During a root canal, your dentist will remove diseased tissue and repair any damage, restoring function and health.
Altamonte Springs, FL general dentists Drs. Mark Miller, Kirk Solberg, and Mark Williams offer root canals. Modern techniques and materials have made the root canal a much easier and tolerable procedure. In fact, most patients will experience relief from the pain caused by infection once the root canal is complete. At Maitland Ave Smile Co, we take the time to create a safe, comfortable environment for each of our patients. If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, we also offer sedation dentistry options to ease your stress.
What is A Root Canal?
During the root canal procedure, the pulp of the tooth is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned, filled, and sealed. The goal is to remove diseased tissue and bacteria, create a stable foundation, and prevent further damage to the tooth. Root canals are performed to save the tooth from extraction.

Root Canal What to Expect
The root canal procedure is usually performed using a local anesthetic. However, depending on your needs, some patients may require sedation dentistry. Root canals can usually be completed in just one visit to our Altamonte dental office.
Once you are comfortable, we will create a small hole in the infected tooth. Using a special tool, your dentist will remove the diseased tissue from the inner portion of the tooth, called the pulp. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and filled with a biocompatible material. Most patients who undergo a root canal will need a dental crown as a final restoration to maintain the integrity of the tooth for the best possible result.
