Chances are, you’ll experience a toothache at some point in your life. A toothache is simply pain in or around a tooth. It may be caused by decay or a damaged filling. It may be a fractured or abscessed tooth. It could also be a result of infected gums or grinding your teeth. Symptoms include sharp, throbbing pain, swelling, fever, headache, and a weird taste in your mouth caused by drainage from the infected tooth.
What should you do for a toothache?
Most importantly, you should make an emergency appointment with your dentist if:
- The pain is severe.
- The toothache lasts longer than 48 hours.
- You have an earache, fever, or pain when opening your mouth wide.
Dental infections can spread to other parts of your face and skull and even to your bloodstream, making it important to diagnose and treat them as quickly as possible.
At the appointment, your dentist will start by conducting a physical exam and looking at your mouth, teeth, gums, jaw, tongue, throat, ears, nose, sinuses, and neck. They will also check your medical history and ask basic questions about your condition, like:
- When did the pain start?
- How severe is it?
- Where does it hurt?
- What makes the pain worse?
- What helps it feel better?
If needed, they will take X-rays and complete other helpful tests, depending on the suspected cause of the toothache.
Once the cause of the toothache is identified, your dentist will offer a treatment plan.
If a cavity is causing the pain, your dentist will fill the cavity or pull the tooth if needed. If the toothache is due to an infection of the tooth’s nerve, a root canal may be necessary. If you have a fever or swelling of the jaw, your dentist may also prescribe an antibiotic.
To prevent a toothache in the future, it’s important to practice good oral health care. Brush twice per day with a flouride toothpaste, and floss once per day. You can use an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day. Pay attention to your diet too, particularly the amount of sugar you consume.
Of course, you should see your dentist twice per year for a professional cleaning and check-up. At one of these appointments, you can ask if your dentist recommends sealants or fluoride applications to strengthen your teeth against cavities.
