Chances are, your daily routine changes in the summer, whether you’re sleeping in and staying up later or spending time on vacation. You may notice changes in your dental care routine too. Perhaps you’re eating more ice cream or drinking more sugary drinks. Or maybe you’re too tired to brush and floss before bed.
You know that drinking enough water is important to your overall health, but did you know that it’s especially important for your oral health? Drinking water throughout the day helps to flush away harmful bacteria, hidden food particles, and other debris that causes tooth decay and gum disease. It also keeps your mouth moist, which prevents dry mouth and keeps your breath smelling (and tasting) fresh.
Summertime means more get-togethers, parties, and sporting events, which often include sodas, lemonade, sports drinks, and fruity cocktails. Sugary drinks can cause tooth decay, while acidic drinks can erode your tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and other oral health issues. Limit your consumption of these beverages, and choose water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea instead.
If you enjoy playing a game of football or another contact sport with your neighbors, consider investing in a mouthguard. Participating in sports without one can lead to painful dental injuries. A mouthguard can even be beneficial for non-contact sports, like skateboarding or rollerblading. If you have questions about which type provides the best protection for your needs, ask your dentist.
Of course, a strong at-home dental care routine is important year-round, but it’s particularly important during the summer months when you’re more likely to enjoy extra treats. Be sure to brush your teeth twice per day for two minutes each time and floss at least once a day — no matter how busy or tired you are! If you’re often on-the-go, consider putting a travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in your car or purse so you can keep up with your summertime dental care routine.
It’s likely that one of your twice-yearly visits to the dentist falls during the summertime. Don’t let a vacation or other commitments take priority! These check-ups are important for maintaining good oral health and catching problems before they become too serious.
